Shaheen: Ten Years
of Showing Up

Grassroots means showing up. Shaheen's first act in Laguna Beach wasn't a campaign. It was a PTA meeting. Then an arts workshop for 500 kids. Then the yearbook, the school garden, the Wellness Dinner, hot cocoa for middle schoolers on the last day of finals. For ten years, she said yes to this community before ever asking for its vote. That's what grassroots means to Shaheen: you earn trust by doing the work, student by student, neighbor by neighbor, year after year.

2016-2017

First PTA meeting. First yes.

  • Room Parent, Samiyah's 1st grade class

  • Arts Workshop Day volunteer, helping 500 elementary students explore visual arts, dance, film, writing, music, and photography for a day

  • After School Program Bollywood dance instructor, with kids performing in traditional Indian dress for their families

2017-2018

Building new programs from scratch.

  • Created the PTA’s first Communications role at Top of the World Elementary

  • Founded and chaired SNAC, the Student Nutrition Advocacy Committee, bringing Harvest of the Month to campus & started the annual Wellness Dinner tradition

Deepening community roots
